Crystal Manufacturing Process

The creation of crystals begins with the combination of three main components: silica (sand), potash (a manufactured salt derived from potassium), and lead oxide. Lead oxide is added to a basic glass mixture to enhance its optical refraction properties, making it an essential component of crystal glass. The lead content in crystals can range from 5-20%, as increasing the lead content increases the brittleness and fragility of the glass. Traditionally, leaded glass has been used in church windows and for certain applications in older homes.

When compared to acrylic, glass is a significant step up in terms of clarity and sharp faceting. However, it still lacks the refractive qualities that make crystal so desirable. Cheap glass imitations of crystal are often poorly made, with lacklustre faceting and polish, and even visible bubbles inside. In contrast, high-quality crystal is carefully designed and crafted to optimise light refraction.

Crystal is made in the same way as glass, by melting the ingredients and pouring the molten mixture into moulds to give the crystal its distinctive shape. Each crystal is precisely faceted, resulting in exceptional light refraction.

K5 OR K9 BOROSILICATE GLASS

K5 and K9 borosilicate glass are the most commonly used materials in the production of chandelier "crystals". The terms "K5" and "K9" originally referred to the percentage of lead oxide content in the glass, with K9 containing 9% and considered of higher quality than K5, which contains 5%.

K9 glass has gained popularity due to its high refractive index and excellent clarity properties. It can be polished to a high shine, just like crystal. Inexpensive and locally produced in China, it is the preferred option for most mass-produced lighting fixtures.

K9 glass is created through a high-temperature heating process and is subsequently cooled, which gives it exceptional durability. As a result, it is less prone to breakage or damage during cleaning or moving, and it is also highly heat-resistant.
